If you want to improve over the audio on-board your motherboard, you can do worse than install this card in a spare PCI slot, assuming you have space free.

I had a hard time with it at first, as it was cutting the dialogue from all my DVDs. I realised that it defaulted to 5.1 sound, and I needed to switch it to stereo in the settings to remove the centre speaker and have dialogue sent to the side speakers – that is until I got my centre speaker connected up properly.

Audio reproduction is nice, but again you need to disable THX TruStudio Pro (enabled by default) to get decent music playback. With it enabled, bass tones are flat, muddy and boomy and the top end is too bright and hard. I’d put it somewhere between my iPod (average) and my Cowon A3 (fantastic) for audio reproduction through headphones. What it sounds like through speakers is entirely dependent on what speakers you have of course. I’d probably recommend getting yourself a proper 5.1 setup with surround if you plan to play movies through it. I’d say this is targeted at gaming enthusiasts and movie watchers mainly, as music lovers will essentially need to disable all the ‘special features’.

I think the message here is configurability – it has a lot of settings you can tweak and adjust to get it sounding the way you want.

The only complaint I have is that it’s not possible (as far as I can see) to adjust output to speakers and headphones independently, so you may have the speakers set to an acceptable volume, but switch over to headphones and you’re deafened. That would be a nice feature.

Is it worth an upgrade over your motherboard built in audio? If you have a low-end motherboard I’d say almost certainly. If on the other hand you have a high end motherboard with 5.1 sound built in, you may not notice a whole deal of difference. The added software may just give it the edge however.

I wasn’t overly impressed with the quality of the on board sound of my Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H motherboard & my old PC’s soundcard was available but was only PCI, so rather than raid that I bought this and at £53, it’s a cheap effective upgrade/improvement compared to the quality of the motherboards on-board sound.

It’s a simple thing to install, just a 5-10 minute job to do and the improvement in sound quality is amazing, especially if you have a reasonably good set of speakers!

Once installed in your PC, just insert the software CD and install all of the drivers & software and enjoy it, the software allows you to tinker with tonal quality etc.

It should be pointed out that this card isn’t best suited to the professional audiophile, yes it can deal with the full range of sampling, but if you’re really serious about your music & music editing you’d be better off going for a high end card.

However for most gamers & home users it’s a very capable sound card that should satisfy your needs & the only difference I can see between this & the more expensive version of this card is that the more expensive one has EMI shielding, some LED lighting & a microphone!

Also please remember this is the PCI-E (PCI Express) version of the card, which is more suited to the newer motherboards with the smaller PCI-E sockets.

Rating based on replacing a SB X-FI card, 15 Aug 2012

This is a very good sound-card, unfortunately Creative did a very good job with the previous generation card the X-FI. As a replacement it’s offered very little. For the most part the features are virtually the same. Having enjoyed the sound from the X-FI I’d be hard pressed to say the sound quality is any better.

It’s nice now to have a system that only requires PCI-E slots and that alone has just about justified the purchase.

If you’ve already got a Soundblaster X-FI, I’d think twice before buy this. If you’re using on-board sound then it’s an excellent purchase.

So if you’ve not got a dedicated sound card, feel free to add a star or two to my rating.
