Works good with my sony laptop. In the description it’s not mentioned that this has extra power supply to provide power for USB devices which requires >0.5A.
So, it can be used for any flash drives, and 3.5 inch external hdd’s with no power supply connected, however, if you want to connect 2.5 hdd which need >0.5A of current you need to use external power supply. In general, great product.

Product arrived in a sturdy box containing the USB 3.0 Controller ExpressCard/34 sealed in what appears to be an anti-static bag, a box containing a power adapter for devices which need a little more juice, an installation CD and instruction manual. The power adaptor comes complete with 2 pin and 3 pin adaptors so perfect for travelling.

I was a little disappointed that it could not power my HDD as my current USB 2.0 slots do and had to resort to using the power adaptor provided, however, given that my little ExpressCard/34 is powering 2 slots rather than the one expansion device it is meant for I cannot fault Freecom for that.

How does it compare to USB 2.0? Well the claim that USB 3 increases the speed 5 times is not quite the case but ExpressCard/34. Freecom claim this device can theoretically achieve a theoretical 5Gbp/s.

Well after a quick comparison (Transferring 11 files totalling 6.64GB), with Windows 7:

My USB 2.0 transfers at roughly:
Download from external HDD: 27-31MB/s (30MB/s average, actual time taken 3mins 50secs)
Upload to external HDD: 19-33MB/s (22MB/s average, actual time taken 5mins 47secs)

Compared to Freecom USB 3.0 transfers at roughly:
Download from external HDD: 62-82MB/s (70MB/s average, actual time taken 1mins 47secs)
Upload to external HDD: 39-65MB/s (42MB/s average, actual time taken 3mins 0secs)

    Conclusion:
If you have plenty of files to transfer and no USB 3 on your current laptop then this is a welcome addition, especially considering the cost, providing 2-3 times the transfer rates of USB 2. Some others may claim faster transfer speeds but ExpressCards according to the specs I could find can only achieve a max of 2.5Gbp/s ~ 80MB/s so compared to other cards which cost 2-3 times more I would stick with this little beastie.

Burnt out in two weeks. Do not buy! I didn’t notice the difference. Might as well but a four way Usb hub.
