A great little device, the 1TB size means i have tried my hardest but so far have not filled it, even though it stores all of my music, photo’s, movies etc etc etc. Comes with a small black slip-on case in the box, so i went with the cheaper black model over twice the price crazy colours since you only ever see the case anyway! Makes no noise at all, and has a small blue light that eminates from the top front when it’s plugged in. Requires no additional power supply other than the single USB cable it comes with(approx 30cm long), so can plug into any USB 2.0 port to function. Tried with my old computer that uses USB 1.0 to extract all of my files to transfer onto my new pc and it still runs, but runs even slower than USB 1.0 should, i mean very very slow, but was the only way to get all of my old files off of it.

When you plug in for the first time you need to wait for your pc to auto detect install (same as any portable USB device), and after that you will have to format it before you can use it as a portable HD – please check online how to do so if you are unsure.

I only use it for storing my files, and not for automatic pc backup, so can’t comment on any aspects like that. But i have owned it for about a year now, take it with me everywhere i go, dropped it, bashed it, now has many dents on the case that it came with, and it still functions perfectly. A very robust and stirdy little device that is much smaller than i thought it was going to be! I would highly recommend this item. As a matter of fact im going to buy a second one for my partner to backup all of her files also.

This drive is excellent! It’s faster making a time maching backup than my western digital mybook essential. It is silent and runs off the usb power so no adapters! Only time will tell how long before it does, but so far I am extremely happy because of it’s ergonomics, size, quietness, and fast speed! When the price dropped I will get another one of these to replace my aging western digital drive!

I have had quite a few external hard drives over the years: some good, some extremely bad. And that’s irrespective of the more established manufacturer names such as Western Digital. The sober truth is that there is no absolutely guarantee that just because you’ve bought a drive from such a branded name it will be perfect.

So rather than venture down the same Western Digital road I decided to go for something a little different. To be honest I didn’t even know Samsung produced hard drives. I know they’re one of the biggest electronics companies in the world: so much so that I recently bought one of their Smart HDTVs, and have been very pleased with the results thus far. And since I also have a Samsung smartphone – again with similar satisfying results – I decided to take a chance with this particular portable drive.

It was despatched in very good time (within 2 working days, even though I went for a standard delivery). The only one thing I would say about the delivery would be the packaging by the supplier. Given the delicate nature of hard drives I would have thought something far more substantial than a flimsy jiffy bag would have been preferred; or at least a red stamp on it saying “FRAGILE”. Fortunately the drive didn’t appear to be damaged either internally or externally, but perhaps I was just lucky.

The installation is pretty straightforward: a rather short (about 25-30 cms) USB2.0 cable plugs into the back of the drive and into your laptop/pc. The drivers should be automatically detected, and within about a minute the PC picked up the drive and assigned a letter..

It is true to say you don’t get the full 1Tb of space. But this has always been the case with drive storage, and not just with external drives: PCs & laptops throughout the last 20 years or so have declared “rounded” storage capacity that doesn’t quite mirror reality. Another good thing about this drive is that it came preformatted in NTFS rather than FAT-32 on older models. This is vital, especially when copying large vob files that exceed the FAT-32 limit of around 4Gb.

To be honest, I haven’t really bothered with the additional software that comes with the drive: it revolves around drive management and auto-backups. But in all honesty these features already exist with Windows 7 and as such I didn’t bother installing this and simply amended my W7 backup routines to include this drive.

Being portable it doesn’t need its own power supply, which is a huge bonus not least because it means one less cable to worry about. And when I did start copying files across I was amazed at how extremely quiet the drive was. Is also relatively light for a TB drive and very sleek too. In fact if it wasn’t for the little blue power light you would never guess it was actually doing anything! And because its USB2.0 file transfers are very quick, which is crucial when copying large VOB files.

My reason for purchasing this drive was to hook it up to my new Smart TV and thus watch all my comedies, documentaries & films from my 120 DVD collection under one “roof”, so to speak. I am still copying my comedy DVDs – 30 thus far. And even though I am doing a straight copy rather than converting into a different video format (avi for example), I have only used about 120Gb from those 30 DVDs. So I still have around 700Gb to play with. And on reflection I will almost certainly buy another one of these drives and copy my films to it rather than having all my eggs in one basket, which always raises the possibility of losing everything should the drive fail.

So in summary: I’ve had this drive for about a week, and love it! It’s sleek, light, simple to use, fast, capacious and fits in well with my matt black TV & Blu-ray sound system (the drive comes in various colours, but I opted for black so that it wouldn’t stand out too much).

Like I said at the beginning of my review: there is no guarantee a drive will work perfectly, regardless of manufacturer. I have ordered a 2nd Samsung 1Tb drive, and there’s always the possibility I will have problems with it; just as I did with Western Digital drives and others over the last 20 years. Reputation is important of course, but in the real world failures still happen. So don’t be put off taking a chance with this Samsung drive. I think its great, especially at around £85.
