Faster given time though a little loud, 13 July 2012

This review is from: Seagate Momentus 2.5 inch XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200rpm Internal Hard Drive (Accessory)

I replaced my laptop HDD with a Samsung 830 SSD which was truly fantastic but while the Samsung was fast, my laptop’s old sata 2 connection meant it wasn’t as fast as it could be so the Samsung went to be desktop and I needed a replacement for the laptop. This left me with a dilemma. With little cash left, I could just about buy a tiny reliable SSD, a slightly bigger but notoriously unreliable SSD or return kicking and screaming to my old 5400 rpm HDD. Then I remembered the Seagate Momentus Hybrid.

I installed on an old 2008 Macbook Pro. A little internet research threw up forums where users recommended doing a clean install first and then using migration assistant to transfer over rather than cloning the old drive onto the Momentus and I decided to follow this advise. Everything went smoothly (I’d recommend the Thermaltake BlacX Dock for transfer though cheaper alternatives are available) and I was soon up and running.

The Momentus may not appear very fast the first few times you use it as the drive has yet to learn what you use more frequently and so has not put anything on the 4GB cache of NAND memory. Having used it for a while, I can definitely see improvement from the first unimpressive boot.
    Some figures:
My old 5400rpm hitachi HDD took 39 seconds from cold start for the grey Apple to appear. The desktop would load fully in 1.17.
The Momentus takes 18.58 seconds and 39.8 seconds respectively.

I’ve yet to run the test where you time how long it takes to boot up and start a dozen apps (old HDD took 3+ minutes, Samsung took 1.10 so I imagine the Momentus would be between the two) but then the Momentus wasn’t designed to do this because other than e-peen measuring, there’s no practical reason to do it. Far more likely is you boot up into 1 or maybe 2 programs and I’m happy to say that from a cold boot, the Momentus can boot up into firefox and restore a previous session with a ridiculous number of tabs in under a minute when on an old HDD I’d be looking at 3 minutes.

    PROS:
Fast SSD like performance. Having used one of the best SSDs currently available, I can genuinely say that in terms of speed, I don’t notice huge amounts of difference with boot speeds or favourite program load times. The best bit is price as you’re getting this performance with the capacity for a fraction of the price. A good SSD (intel, samsung) pushing 500gb is going to set you back £500 if not more. If you really wanted an SSD than at time of writing you’d be looking at a 64gb drive for the same price as the Momentus.

    CONS:
This is SSD-like performance rather than a genuine SSD. The fast speeds you’ll experience are not universal because the drive has a pretty meager amount of NAND, far too small to be used for actual storage accessible by the user (you could barely fit a fraction of the OS on it) and so instead is used as a cache.
Another drawback is sound as the Momentus is noticeably louder. Admittedly I was using an SSD which was literally silent so my perspective may be skewed but I would imagine laptop users upgrading from a standard 5400rpm drive would find this drive quite noisy. It’s not helped by the cache being so small, the drive is still constantly being accessed. It doesn’t offer the low power usage as it is effectively a 7200rpm hard drive so it’s going to have a bigger drain on battery life than either a 5400rpm drive or SSD. Finally is the fact that as a HDD, it carries with it all the frailties of the tech. The SSD isn’t license to throw your laptop around but in those horrifying moments when your laptop falls off a table, you can be fairly sure that while your laptop might not be okay, your data probably is. This isn’t the case with the Momentus.

    Final Line:
An SSD would offer far greater performance than a Momentus overall but it always come back to price and capacity. Presently SSD prices have been falling quite rapidly and by large amounts but the reductions are starting to slow and they’re still a long way off being as cheap as a Momentus for the size. If you want super fast speeds all round and generally keep a pretty lean computer or are prepared to then go SSD. If you want speed but still want the option of having lots of data close to hand and not having to bother with externals then go Momentus.

A huge performance boost over an ageing 7200 rpm drive! Cut my boot time to 1/3 (~25 sec OSX 10.6.8) and delivers snappy performance loading applications and navigating large folders of documents. I can load Apple Aperture with a 20 GB library in 5 seconds.

A breath of fresh life for my 4 1/2 year old macbook. Any HDD is going to feel slow after this!

2.16 GHz C2D Macbook, with 3 GB 667 MHz ram.

My Acer Aspire 8943g was severely handicapped by it’s base 5400rpm WD Scorpion blue hard drives to the point that with a multitude of apps loaded it was borderline unusable despite 12Gb RAM and an i7 quad core processor.

It probably took about 3 mins to load Windows 7 Home Premium previously and a good few mins after that to load some apps.

With this drive installed as the System Drive, from the Acer POST screen to a useable desktop is 50secs (ok this is much longer than is mentioned on benchmarking sites but a marked improvement). At 1min 20secs I can have loaded Word, Excel (small spreadsheet about 3mb but with thousands of calculations), Chrome, Photoshop Elements, Outlook and iTunes. That’s fast. It’s not SSD fast but definitely faster than any Windows experience I’ve had to date.

It came in a unmarked padded box and was sealed in a anti-static bag. Fitting it was easy and managed to clone my old drive in a couple of hours using Acronis True Image.

I have had one BSOD during shutdown which I have read about but have rebooted several times since and not had a problem. It may have been my fault as I tried to shutdown shortly after logging in. This version came with SD28 of the firmware which is the latest (at time of writing).
