This review is from: Shuttle Slim XS35V3 Barebone Case for PC (Intel Atom D2700, 2x DDR3 SODIMM, 1x S-ATA, Intel NM10, Wifi, HDMI, 4-In-1 Card Reader) (Personal Computers)

I bought this as a silent media centre PC for the likes of XBMC, iPlayer, Netflix, Lovefilm etc. I was attracted by the claims of full HD playback over HDMI and the totally silent and low power operation.

To begin with, I’m very pleased with the build quality of the device. Easy to install SODIMM memory and SATA SSD or HD and it is truly silent with totally passive cooling and no whirring fans. Perfect.

Installing Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 in dual boot mode was simple enough and both were usable. The intention was to run Windows 7 for Netflix and/or Lovefilm (which require Microsoft Silverlight) and Ubuntu for XBMC, iPlayer and general web-browsing etc. Sadly this plan had to be abandoned for a Windows-only installation, but that’s not a disaster. I’ll explain why this was necessary.

Firstly, you are restricted to Windows 7 32-bit because of inadequate support from Intel for the GMA 3650 “Cedarview” graphics chipset. That is quite literally the ONLY OS version you can currently use – no support for Windows 7 64-bit, Win XP, Vista or Windows 8 preview. You can also forget Linux at present, as the Cedarview graphics driver development is rudimentary and I haven’t yet been able to get this to provide any VAAPI acceleration in the likes of VLC, so full HD playback is a non-starter.

Even on Windows 7, the latest graphics drivers released for GMA 3600-series (8.14.8.1065 as of 26/09/2012) are buggy with XBMC 11 “Eden” and result in flickering and black screen on playback. Turning off DXVA2 acceleration allowed playback, but obviously increased the load on the CPU and jerky rendering in HD.

However, it’s possible to get XBMC working by installing a later version of the GMA 3600-series drivers (8.14.8.1083 here -> [...]). Although these are nominally released only for the “Intel® Desktop Board” D2500 and D2700 series systems, these use the same chipset as the XS35V3 and do actually work. I’m not sure why Intel haven’t released these for the generic GMA 3600 graphics driver line as they are obviously a later version of the same development line and just refer to Atom D2x00 series chipsets in their readme documentation. My thanks to SausageKing on the XBMC forums for this fix ([...])

I’m happy now that I’ve got it working to my satisfaction, but it was harder work than I would have liked, and very disappointing that Linux drivers are not yet in a working state. Maybe those will develop and mature in time, but at present it’s Hobson’s choice of Win 7 32-bit or nothing.

For the above reason, I can only give this 4 stars.
