The Double Happiness Company

The Double Happiness Company

Ballet-mad Katie Rivers lives in a small border town in New Mexico with her eccentric half-Cherokee mother Lola, wisecracking father Haywood, and Kawasaki-crazy brother Rhett, who calls her `a weirdnik in a tutu’.

When she turns 15, Katie escapes from her family and boring hometown into the hothouse world of professional dance. Her single-mindedness takes her from a desert backwater to the dance capital of the world. Katie struggles to adapt to the shove and push of New York City as e

truth and colour in every line, 4 Feb 2011

The protagonist Katie is an aspiring ballerina, but this book is about so much more than ballet… family relationships, ambition, love, growing up, the changing political scene in America with the backdrop of the Vietnam war… It’s a rich tale told with truth and colour in every line. My favourite character is Lola, the loving but frustrated, unfulfilled mother with a gift for snappy put-downs and harsh wisdoms, like “Ballet is as useful as a tit on a boar-hog.” Oh Lola! I was also fascinated by Rhett, the intriguing brother who dodges the draft, confronts rejection and occasionally lets out his Cherokee as he rolls in the dust or studies the stars. The settings are intense: from New Mexico to New York, authentically described in vivid but spare detail. A rich and rewarding read!

This review is from: The Double Happiness Company (Kindle Edition)

When I ordered `The Double Happiness Company’ on Amazon I was looking for something different. Something not written with the calculated formulae and predictability you find in some books churned out on the PPL (publishing production line). Authors aren’t meant to be akin to dairy cows milked by big, fat farmers!

This book was delightful to read and I found myself drawn into the underlying complexity of the characters’ relationships with one another. A story about aspirations and regret, dreams and reality, and the choice between life and death both literally and figuratively. I felt the joy, the passion, the heartache and pain, and found myself spurring on the main character when she needed encouragement and chastising her when she swayed from the path.

The writing is emotive and descriptive and draws you into the story, so much so that I nearly missed my stop on the train! It’s definitely worth the read and will leave you with a feeling of (I struggle to find the word)…. not contentment…. but accord. And I guarantee that’s what the author intended. A lovely story, and my very first book review!

    A very human novel, 20 Feb 2011
    By
    Hekate “H. P.” (London) –

This is the story of a family shaken by contrasting beliefs and demanding dreams. Katie Rivers knows she was born to be a ballet dancer and refuses to let fate or her mother get in the way of her ambition. Lola Rivers knows what’s best for her daughter and Madame Feodorova’s sadistic training regime is not it. Mother and daughter will battle loss, injury and bullimia to find the strength to meet each other halfway. The Double Happiness Company is set with the backdrop of the Vietnam war in a country that, like the Rivers family, is also learning to re-evaluate its dreams. This is a novel that is funny, heartbreaking and uniquely genuine.
